Tim Brown
Tim Brown is executive vice president, general counsel, and secretary with Principal Financial Group®.
Tim is responsible for our legal, government relations, and compliance teams, and he serves as corporate secretary to the Principal® Board of Directors. As general counsel, he leads more than 430 professionals, spanning 15+ countries. This team is responsible for helping our businesses innovate and grow while complying with the laws, regulations, and policies in all 80+ nations and territories where Principal serves customers. The team also helps guide our advocacy strategy worldwide to ensure our customers’ needs are met.
Before joining Principal in June 2026, Tim served as executive vice president, chief legal officer, and corporate secretary at Venerable Holdings, Inc., and was also president of Venerable Investment Advisers. Prior to Venerable, he was vice president and chief counsel for M&A, corporate transactions, and insurance regulatory at Voya.
Tim earned his Juris Doctor from the University of Michigan Law School and a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering from Tennessee State University. He also completed the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School.
Tim is a board director for the Federation of Iowa Insurers and an advisory board director for the MCCA. He previously served as a trustee of the Venerable Variable Insurance Trust, SunAmerica Series Trust, and Seasons Series Trust.
